Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most research-supported psychotherapeutic modalities for treatment of a wide array of conditions, including anxiety, depression, phobias, mood disorders, disordered eating, and psychosis.  Studies have found CBT to be effective for all age groups, from as young as 6-years-old to adults and seniors.  Unlike more process-oriented approaches, CBT is often more structured and sometimes short-term in its duration.

The premise of CBT presumes that, in any given situation, we experience thoughts, feelings, and behaviors associated with that situation.  These aspects are thought to all influence one other, which can lead to predictable cycles or outcomes in certain situations.  CBT strives to intervene with thoughts and behaviors that may be facilitating negative outcomes and moods and to change those thoughts and behaviors to produce a more desirable result.

An initial session often involves identifying your goals for treatment and exploring issues and concerns associated therewith.  CBT works to modify thoughts and behaviors related to troublesome situations or events in an effort to help alleviate symptoms.  It allows you to identify ways to change your thinking and behavioral patterns to lead to what can be a happier and more fulfilling existence.

Follow-up sessions usually involve practice or homework assignments so that you can get results from therapy faster.  Assignments might include things like thought logs, mood logs, thought challenging exercises, and behavioral experiments.  Your therapist will review these assignments with you and explore ways of facilitating change and embracing new perspectives.
